Topsoil Tips
Topsoil is the outer few inches of soil that covers the land of the earth. The many types of soil are comprised of a mixture of 3 main ingredients: clay, sand and silt. The percentage of each of these ingredients determines the type of soil.
Topsoil is important for the growth of plants but there is a big global problem of soil erosion such as in Africa where it can be difficult to grow crops.
Loam is preferable for topsoil where it mostly consists of sand and silt. If there is more sand than silt, then the soil is termed sandy loam or where there is more silt than sand it becomes silt loam soil. And of course, there must be moisture present to feed the plants. And a good dose of compost helps add nutrients to the topsoil.
This is just a quick introduction to topsoil and we will gradually add more topics. The first is about Topsoil Weight and includes a calculator tool.
